Ensuring quality standards for flow meters is critical. Flow meters are used for measuring the flow of various liquids or gases in a process system, such as a refinery or chemical plant. As part of compliance with FDA regulations, calibrating or re-calibration of these devices contributes to a company’s assurance that they are adhering to FDA regulations.
These are the practices you need to follow to ensure quality standards for flow meter calibration:
Laboratory Accreditation
Accreditation by a flow meter accreditation body means that traceability standards have been met, uncertainty has been recorded, and proper procedures have been carried out.
Show Traceability
The calibration of a flow meter is conducted by comparing its readings against a standard, under controlled test conditions. For successful flow meter calibration, the measurements from the standard device used for comparison must be traceable to national/international industry standards.
Understanding Fluid Properties
Other than quantity, the properties of the fluid or gas being measured also have to be taken into consideration. This causes it to interact with the flow meter in some way, and changes in this interaction can affect the measurements given by the device.
Installation Conditions
Other factors that may affect a flow meter’s readings include vibrations, positioning, electronic interference and flow disturbances at the installation site. The installation of the standard device used for reference should also be as similar to the test device’s installation conditions as possible.
Where a flow meter is used with a primary device or gauging structure, the uncertainty of that device or structure and the relationship of the measured parameter with flow rate must be taken into account when calculating the uncertainty of the complete flow measurement system, which should be done according to the principles of the ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM).
